Use-After-Free in Linux Kernel i915_perf ioctl Race Condition

Description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/i915: fix race condition UAF in i915_perf_add_config_ioctl Userspace can guess the id value and try to race oa_config object creation with config remove, resulting in a use-after-free if we dereference the object after unlocking the metrics_lock. For that reason, unlocking the metrics_lock must be done after we are done dereferencing the object. [tursulin: Manually added stable tag.] (cherry picked from commit 49f6f6483b652108bcb73accd0204a464b922395)

AI Powered Q&A
Can you explain this vulnerability to me?

This vulnerability is a race condition use-after-free (UAF) in the Linux kernel's drm/i915 driver, specifically in the i915_perf_add_config_ioctl function. Userspace can guess an id value and attempt to race the creation of an oa_config object with its removal. If the object is dereferenced after unlocking the metrics_lock, it can lead to use-after-free, causing potential instability or exploitation. The fix involves ensuring the metrics_lock is not unlocked until after the object is fully dereferenced.

How can this vulnerability impact me? :

This vulnerability can lead to use-after-free conditions in the Linux kernel, which may cause system instability, crashes, or potentially allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code or escalate privileges by exploiting the race condition in the drm/i915 driver.

What immediate steps should I take to mitigate this vulnerability?

To mitigate this vulnerability, update the Linux kernel to a version that includes the fix for the race condition in drm/i915 (specifically the fix for use-after-free in i915_perf_add_config_ioctl). Avoid using vulnerable kernel versions and apply vendor-provided patches as soon as they are available.
