Unknown Unknown - Not Provided
Null Pointer Dereference in Linux Kernel NTFS3 via kmemdup

Publication date: 2025-12-30

Last updated on: 2025-12-30

Assigner: kernel.org

Description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fs/ntfs3: Add check for kmemdup Since the kmemdup may return NULL pointer, it should be better to add check for the return value in order to avoid NULL pointer dereference.

AI Powered Q&A
Can you explain this vulnerability to me?

This vulnerability is a NULL pointer dereference issue in the Linux kernel's NTFS3 filesystem driver. The function kmemdup, which duplicates memory, may return a NULL pointer if it fails. The vulnerability arises because the code did not check if kmemdup returned NULL before using the pointer, which can lead to a NULL pointer dereference and potentially cause a system crash or instability.

How can this vulnerability impact me? :

If exploited, this vulnerability can cause a NULL pointer dereference in the Linux kernel, potentially leading to a system crash or denial of service. This can affect system stability and availability.
