Description

Hugging Face Transformers SEW convert_config Code Injection Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Hugging Face Transformers. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must convert a malicious checkpoint. The specific flaw exists within the convert_config function. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of a user-supplied string before using it to execute Python code. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current user. Was ZDI-CAN-28251.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability exists in the Hugging Face Transformers library within the convert_config function. It occurs because the function does not properly validate a user-supplied string before using it to execute Python code. An attacker can exploit this by tricking a user into converting a malicious checkpoint, which then allows the attacker to execute arbitrary code with the current user's privileges. [1]

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code on your system with the same privileges as the current user. This can lead to unauthorized access, data theft, system compromise, or further attacks depending on the permissions of the user running the vulnerable software. [1]
