Improper Input Validation in Intel UEFI SMM Enables Privilege Escalation

Publication date: 2026-03-10

Last updated on: 2026-03-10

Assigner: Intel Corporation

Description
Improper input validation in some UEFI firmware SMM module for the Intel(R) reference platforms may allow an escalation of privilege. System software adversary with a privileged user combined with a low complexity attack may enable local code execution. This result may potentially occur via local access when attack requirements are present without special internal knowledge and requires no user interaction. The potential vulnerability may impact the confidentiality (high), integrity (high) and availability (high) of the vulnerable system, resulting in subsequent system confidentiality (high), integrity (high) and availability (high) impacts.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is caused by improper input validation in a UEFI firmware System Management Mode (SMM) module on Intel reference platforms. It may allow an attacker with privileged user access and local system access to escalate their privileges and execute code locally. The attack does not require special internal knowledge or user interaction and is considered low complexity.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can have a severe impact on the affected system's confidentiality, integrity, and availability. An attacker exploiting this flaw could gain higher privileges, potentially leading to unauthorized access, modification, or disruption of system operations.
