CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Substance3D - Stager versions 3.1.7 and earlier. It is a Use After Free vulnerability, which means that the software may attempt to use memory after it has been freed, potentially leading to unexpected behavior.

Exploitation of this vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code within the context of the current user. However, exploitation requires user interaction, specifically that the victim must open a malicious file.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to run arbitrary code on your system with the same privileges as the current user. This could lead to unauthorized actions such as installing malware, stealing data, or modifying files.

Since the attack requires user interaction (opening a malicious file), the risk depends on the likelihood of such an event occurring.

Mitigation Strategies

To mitigate this vulnerability, avoid opening malicious files as exploitation requires user interaction through opening such files.

Ensure that you update Substance3D - Stager to a version later than 3.1.7 where this Use After Free vulnerability is fixed.
