Authentication Request Rate Limiting Flaw in WebSocket API Enables DoS, Brute-Force

Publication date: 2026-03-06

Last updated on: 2026-05-06

Assigner: ICS-CERT

Description
The WebSocket Application Programming Interface lacks restrictions on the number of authentication requests. This absence of rate limiting may allow an attacker to conduct denial-of-service attacks by suppressing or mis-routing legitimate charger telemetry, or conduct brute-force attacks to gain unauthorized access.

AI Powered Q&A
Can you explain this vulnerability to me?

This vulnerability exists because the WebSocket Application Programming Interface does not limit the number of authentication requests that can be made.

Without such rate limiting, an attacker can exploit this by sending many authentication requests, which can lead to denial-of-service attacks or brute-force attempts to gain unauthorized access.

How can this vulnerability impact me? :

The vulnerability can impact you by allowing attackers to perform denial-of-service attacks that suppress or mis-route legitimate charger telemetry.

Additionally, attackers may conduct brute-force attacks to gain unauthorized access, potentially compromising system security.

How does this vulnerability affect compliance with common standards and regulations (like GDPR, HIPAA)?:

I don't know

How can this vulnerability be detected on my network or system? Can you suggest some commands?
