Path Traversal in OpenClaw Allows Arbitrary File Access

Publication date: 2026-03-05

Last updated on: 2026-03-23

Assigner: VulnCheck

Description
OpenClaw versions prior to 2026.2.12 construct transcript file paths using unsanitized sessionId parameters and sessionFile paths without enforcing directory containment. Authenticated attackers can exploit path traversal sequences like ../../etc/passwd in sessionId or sessionFile parameters to read or write arbitrary files outside the agent sessions directory.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability exists in OpenClaw versions prior to 2026.2.12. It occurs because the software constructs transcript file paths using unsanitized sessionId parameters and sessionFile paths without enforcing directory containment. This means that an authenticated attacker can use path traversal sequences, such as ../../etc/passwd, in these parameters to read or write arbitrary files outside the intended agent sessions directory.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability allows an authenticated attacker to read or write arbitrary files outside the designated agent sessions directory. This can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive files, potential data leakage, or modification of critical files on the system, which can compromise system integrity and confidentiality.
