Description
GStreamer RIFF Palette Integer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of GStreamer. Interaction with this library is required to exploit this vulnerability but attack vectors may vary depending on the implementation. The specific flaw exists within the handling of palette data in AVI files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in an integer overflow before writing to memory. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-28854.

CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

AI Powered Q&A
Can you explain this vulnerability to me?

CVE-2026-2921 is a remote code execution vulnerability in the GStreamer multimedia framework. It arises from improper validation of user-supplied palette data within RIFF AVI files, which leads to an integer overflow before writing to memory.

This integer overflow can be exploited by remote attackers to execute arbitrary code within the context of the current process. Exploitation requires interaction with the GStreamer library, but the exact attack vectors may vary depending on how GStreamer is implemented.

How can this vulnerability impact me? :

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected systems running GStreamer. Successful exploitation can lead to full compromise of the affected process, potentially allowing attackers to take control of the system or perform unauthorized actions.

How does this vulnerability affect compliance with common standards and regulations (like GDPR, HIPAA)?:

I don't know

How can this vulnerability be detected on my network or system? Can you suggest some commands?

This vulnerability involves the handling of palette data in RIFF AVI files by the GStreamer library, leading to an integer overflow. Detection would require monitoring or analyzing interactions with GStreamer when processing AVI files.

There are no specific commands or network detection methods provided in the available resources to detect exploitation attempts or presence of this vulnerability on your system or network.

What immediate steps should I take to mitigate this vulnerability?

The immediate mitigation step is to update GStreamer to the latest version where this vulnerability has been addressed and corrected.

Additionally, avoid processing untrusted or malicious AVI files that could exploit the integer overflow in palette data handling.
