Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an out-of-bounds write issue found in certain versions of Acrobat Reader. It occurs when the software writes data outside the boundaries of allocated memory, which can corrupt memory and potentially allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code.

To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker needs to trick a user into opening a specially crafted malicious file in the affected Acrobat Reader versions.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code with the same privileges as the current user. This means the attacker could potentially take control of the affected system, steal data, install malware, or perform other malicious actions.

However, exploitation requires user interaction, specifically opening a malicious file, which means social engineering or phishing might be involved.

Mitigation Strategies

To mitigate this vulnerability, ensure that users do not open malicious files that could trigger the out-of-bounds write vulnerability in affected Acrobat Reader versions.

Additionally, update Acrobat Reader to a version later than 2020.009.20074, 2020.001.30002, 2017.011.30171, or 2015.006.30523, as these versions are affected.

Since exploitation requires user interaction, educating users about the risks of opening suspicious files can also help reduce the risk.
