Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stack buffer overflow found in the filein_process function (in_file.c) of GPAC MP4Box version 2.4. It occurs when the software processes a specially crafted MP4 file.

An attacker can exploit this flaw by supplying a malicious MP4 file, which causes the program to overwrite parts of the stack memory, potentially leading to a crash or other unintended behavior.

Impact Analysis

Exploiting this vulnerability can cause a Denial of Service (DoS) condition, meaning the affected application (GPAC MP4Box) may crash or become unresponsive when processing a crafted MP4 file.

This disruption can affect availability of services or applications relying on GPAC MP4Box for MP4 file processing.

Compliance Impact

The vulnerability described is a stack buffer overflow in GPAC MP4Box v2.4 that allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by supplying a crafted MP4 file. This vulnerability impacts availability but does not affect confidentiality or integrity.

Since the vulnerability results in a DoS without compromising data confidentiality or integrity, its direct impact on compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAAβ€”which primarily focus on protecting personal data privacy and integrityβ€”is limited.

However, availability is also a component of many security frameworks, and prolonged or repeated DoS conditions could indirectly affect compliance if critical services are disrupted.
