CVE-2026-13226
Deferred Deferred - Pending Action
SQL Injection in Groundhogg WordPress Plugin

Publication date: 2026-06-26

Last updated on: 2026-06-26

Assigner: Wordfence

Description
The Groundhogg β€” CRM, Newsletters, and Marketing Automation plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to generic SQL Injection via the 'after' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.5.4 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Sales Manager-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. The AJAX handler wp_ajax_groundhogg_get_contacts_table has its capability check commented out and performs no nonce verification, meaning any authenticated user regardless of role can reach the vulnerable code path.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

The Groundhogg plugin for WordPress, up to version 4.5.4, has a vulnerability involving SQL Injection through the 'after' parameter. This happens because the plugin does not properly escape user input and does not sufficiently prepare the SQL query. Authenticated users with Sales Manager-level access or higher can exploit this to append malicious SQL queries to existing ones.

Additionally, the AJAX handler wp_ajax_groundhogg_get_contacts_table has its capability check commented out and lacks nonce verification, allowing any authenticated user, regardless of role, to access the vulnerable code path.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers with certain authenticated access to extract sensitive information from the database by injecting additional SQL queries. Because the AJAX handler lacks proper checks, even users with minimal privileges can reach the vulnerable code, increasing the risk.

The impact includes potential unauthorized disclosure of sensitive data, which can compromise the confidentiality of information stored within the Groundhogg plugin's database.

Compliance Impact

The vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with Sales Manager-level access or higher to perform SQL Injection attacks that can extract sensitive information from the database.

This exposure of sensitive data could potentially lead to non-compliance with data protection regulations such as GDPR and HIPAA, which require the protection of personal and sensitive information.

However, the provided information does not explicitly detail the impact on compliance with these standards.

Detection Guidance

Detection of this vulnerability involves identifying exploitation attempts targeting the 'after' parameter in the Groundhogg plugin's AJAX handler wp_ajax_groundhogg_get_contacts_table.

Since the vulnerability allows SQL injection via the 'after' parameter, monitoring HTTP requests to the WordPress AJAX endpoint for suspicious or malformed SQL-like payloads in this parameter can help detect exploitation attempts.

Commands to detect such activity might include using web server logs or network traffic inspection tools to search for requests containing the 'after' parameter with unusual SQL syntax.

  • Example command using grep on web server logs: grep -i 'wp-admin/admin-ajax.php' access.log | grep 'action=groundhogg_get_contacts_table' | grep 'after='
  • Use intrusion detection systems (IDS) or web application firewalls (WAF) to alert on SQL injection patterns in the 'after' parameter.
Mitigation Strategies

Immediate mitigation steps include updating the Groundhogg plugin to a version later than 4.5.4 where this vulnerability is fixed.

If an update is not immediately possible, restrict access to the WordPress AJAX handler wp_ajax_groundhogg_get_contacts_table by limiting authenticated user roles or applying additional access controls.

Implement web application firewall (WAF) rules to block or monitor suspicious SQL injection attempts targeting the 'after' parameter.

Review and tighten user permissions to ensure only trusted users have Sales Manager-level access or higher.
