Executive Summary

This vulnerability occurs in Grafana Tempo when a TraceQL query includes a large exemplars hint value. The large value causes the Tempo instance to allocate an excessive amount of memory.

As a result, the system can run out of memory and crash.

An authenticated user can exploit this behavior to trigger a denial of service against the Tempo service.

Impact Analysis

The primary impact of this vulnerability is a denial of service (DoS) condition.

An attacker with authentication can cause the Grafana Tempo service to crash by making it consume excessive memory.

This can lead to service unavailability, disrupting monitoring and tracing capabilities that rely on Tempo.
