CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Use After Free issue in Adobe InDesign Desktop versions 21.3, 20.5.3 and earlier. It occurs when the software attempts to use memory after it has been freed, which can lead to unexpected behavior.

An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by tricking a user into opening a malicious file, which then could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the current user.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on your system with the same permissions as the user running Adobe InDesign.

This could lead to unauthorized actions such as installing malware, stealing data, or modifying files.

However, exploitation requires user interaction, specifically opening a malicious file.

Mitigation Strategies

To mitigate this vulnerability, avoid opening malicious files in affected versions of Adobe InDesign Desktop (versions 21.3, 20.5.3 and earlier). Since exploitation requires user interaction, educating users to not open suspicious files can reduce risk.

Additionally, consider updating Adobe InDesign Desktop to a version later than 21.3 or 20.5.3 once a patch is available to address this Use After Free vulnerability.
