Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stack-based buffer overflow found in Adobe InDesign Desktop versions 21.3, 20.5.3, and earlier. It occurs when a user opens a specially crafted malicious file, which can cause the program to overwrite parts of memory improperly.

As a result, an attacker could execute arbitrary code within the context of the current user, potentially taking control of the affected system.

Exploitation requires user interaction, meaning the victim must open the malicious file for the vulnerability to be triggered.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability can allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code with the same privileges as the current user.

This could lead to unauthorized actions such as installing programs, viewing, changing, or deleting data, or creating new accounts with full user rights.

The severity is high, as indicated by the CVSS score of 7.8, with impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Mitigation Strategies

To mitigate this vulnerability, avoid opening malicious files in affected versions of Adobe InDesign Desktop (versions 21.3, 20.5.3 and earlier). Since exploitation requires user interaction, educating users to not open suspicious or untrusted files is important.

Additionally, updating Adobe InDesign Desktop to a version later than 21.3 or 20.5.3, once a patch is available, is recommended to address the stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability.
