Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Acrobat Reader versions 24.001.30365, 26.001.21651 and earlier. It is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability, which means the software reads memory outside the intended boundaries. This flaw could allow an attacker to disclose sensitive information stored in memory.

To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker needs the victim to open a specially crafted malicious file, requiring user interaction.

Impact Analysis

The primary impact of this vulnerability is the potential disclosure of sensitive information from the affected system's memory. An attacker could gain access to confidential data by tricking a user into opening a malicious file.

The vulnerability does not affect integrity or availability, but the confidentiality impact is high.

Mitigation Strategies

To mitigate this vulnerability, ensure that users do not open malicious files that could exploit the out-of-bounds read issue in affected Acrobat Reader versions.

Consider updating Acrobat Reader to a version later than 24.001.30365 or 26.001.21651 once patches are available.

Educate users about the risks of opening files from untrusted sources to reduce the chance of exploitation.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability in Acrobat Reader could lead to the disclosure of sensitive information due to an out-of-bounds read. Such unauthorized disclosure of sensitive data may impact compliance with data protection regulations like GDPR and HIPAA, which require safeguarding personal and sensitive information against unauthorized access.

However, exploitation requires user interaction, specifically opening a malicious file, which may influence the risk assessment and mitigation strategies under these standards.
