IKEv1 Certificate Validation Bypass in VPN Site-to-Site Connections

Publication date: 2026-06-08

Last updated on: 2026-06-08

Assigner: Check Point Software Technologies Ltd.

Description
A weakness in the certificate validation logic of the deprecated IKEv1 key exchange may allow an unauthenticated attacker positioned as a man-in-the-middle to bypass certificate validation in VPN site-to-site connections that use certificate-based authentication. Successful exploitation could allow interception or modification of traffic traversing the VPN tunnel.

Impact Analysis

The impact of this vulnerability is that an attacker could intercept or alter sensitive data transmitted over a VPN tunnel between sites. This could lead to unauthorized access to confidential information or manipulation of data in transit.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a weakness in the certificate validation logic of the deprecated IKEv1 key exchange protocol. It allows an unauthenticated attacker who is positioned as a man-in-the-middle to bypass certificate validation in VPN site-to-site connections that use certificate-based authentication.

By exploiting this weakness, the attacker can intercept or modify the traffic that passes through the VPN tunnel.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows an unauthenticated attacker to bypass certificate validation in VPN site-to-site connections, potentially enabling interception or modification of traffic. Such a compromise of data confidentiality and integrity could lead to violations of compliance requirements under standards like GDPR and HIPAA, which mandate protection of sensitive data during transmission.

Specifically, failure to secure VPN traffic against man-in-the-middle attacks may result in unauthorized access to personal or protected health information, thereby breaching regulatory obligations for data security and privacy.
