Compliance Impact

The vulnerability allows remote code execution, severely impacting confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system.

Such impacts on confidentiality and integrity could lead to non-compliance with standards and regulations like GDPR and HIPAA, which require protection of sensitive data and system integrity.

However, the provided information does not explicitly state the direct effects on compliance with these standards.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in OpenProject, a web-based project management software, is caused by cache store poisoning which leads to Remote Code Execution (RCE). It affects versions prior to 17.3.3 and 17.4.1. An attacker can exploit this flaw to execute arbitrary code remotely without needing any user interaction or privileges.

The attack requires the attacker to be on the same network or physically close to the target system, as the attack vector is adjacent.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can have severe impacts including compromising the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system.

  • Confidentiality: An attacker could access sensitive data.
  • Integrity: An attacker could modify or corrupt data.
  • Availability: An attacker could disrupt the availability of the service.

Because it allows remote code execution without user interaction or privileges, it poses a critical security risk.

Mitigation Strategies

To mitigate this vulnerability, you should upgrade OpenProject to version 17.3.3 or 17.4.1 or later, as these versions contain the fix for the cache store poisoning vulnerability that leads to remote code execution.
