Executive Summary

This vulnerability exists in the ATEN Unizon software, specifically in the ImportDeviceList method. It is a directory traversal flaw that allows an authenticated remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected system. The issue arises because the software does not properly validate user-supplied file paths before using them in file operations, enabling attackers to execute code with SYSTEM-level privileges.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability allows an attacker with authentication to execute arbitrary code on your system with SYSTEM privileges. This means the attacker can potentially take full control of the affected device, leading to unauthorized access, data theft, system manipulation, or disruption of services.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects the `/rest/devices/csv` endpoint of ATEN Unizon, which allows authenticated administrators to import device lists via CSV file uploads. Detection can focus on monitoring access to this endpoint and inspecting file upload activities for suspicious or unexpected filenames that attempt directory traversal.

Since authentication is required to exploit this vulnerability, reviewing logs for authenticated sessions performing CSV imports can help identify potential exploitation attempts.

Specific commands are not provided in the available resources, but general detection steps could include:

  • Monitoring web server or application logs for POST requests to `/rest/devices/csv`.
  • Using network monitoring tools to detect unusual file upload patterns or directory traversal attempts in filenames.
  • Checking authentication logs to correlate suspicious activity with authenticated users.
Compliance Impact

The provided information does not specify how this vulnerability affects compliance with common standards and regulations such as GDPR or HIPAA.

Mitigation Strategies

The primary mitigation step is to update the ATEN Unizon firmware to version FW V2.7.264.001 or later, which addresses this vulnerability.

Additionally, ensure that only trusted and authenticated administrators have access to the device import functionality to reduce the risk of exploitation.

Implement monitoring and logging of file upload activities to detect any attempts to exploit the vulnerability.

Follow ATEN's vulnerability management policy and security advisories for further guidance and updates.
