Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the ProfileGrid WordPress plugin before version 5.9.9.7 allows authenticated users with Subscriber-level access or higher to perform unauthorized actions on private message threads of other users. These actions include soft-deleting threads, tampering with thread metadata, and marking unread messages as read without proper authorization checks.

Detection Guidance

Check if the ProfileGrid plugin version is below 5.9.9.7. Use WordPress admin dashboard or run: wp plugin list --name=profilegrid. Inspect network traffic for unauthorized actions on private message endpoints.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to modify or delete private conversations they are not part of, compromising the integrity and availability of user messages. While message content remains inaccessible, the ability to alter thread statuses could disrupt communication and lead to misinformation or confusion among users.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized modifications to private user data, potentially violating integrity and confidentiality requirements. GDPR emphasizes data integrity and access controls, while HIPAA requires safeguards for protected health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the ProfileGrid plugin to version 5.9.9.7 or later immediately. Temporarily restrict Subscriber-level users from accessing private message features until patched.
