CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a use-after-free flaw in OpenVPN versions 2.6.0 through 2.6.20 and 2.7_alpha1 through 2.7.4. It occurs during TLS session promotion when a remote authenticated peer triggers an incomplete guard condition, potentially causing a denial of service or memory leakage.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability may allow remote attackers to crash the OpenVPN service, leading to service disruption. It could also cause memory leakage, potentially exposing sensitive data or enabling further attacks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability may impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by potentially allowing unauthorized access to sensitive data due to memory leakage or denial of service, which could compromise data integrity and confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade OpenVPN to a version later than 2.6.20 or 2.7.4 where the incomplete guard has been fixed to prevent the use-after-free issue during TLS session promotion.
