Executive Summary

This is a path traversal vulnerability in Progress Telerik UI for AJAX before version 2026.2.708. It allows attackers to manipulate file paths in the storage key, leading to deserialization of attacker-controlled data and remote code execution.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your system is running Progress Telerik UI for AJAX versions prior to 2026.2.708. Inspect file-based persistence storage providers for path traversal patterns in user-controlled input. Monitor for unexpected deserialization or remote code execution attempts in logs.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary code on your server, potentially gaining full control. This could lead to data theft, system compromise, or further network infiltration if the vulnerable application is exposed to untrusted networks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules. Organizations may face fines or penalties for failing to protect sensitive data due to this flaw.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Upgrade Progress Telerik UI for AJAX to version 2026.2.708 or later to address the path traversal and deserialization vulnerability.
  • Review and restrict access to the AppDataStorageProvider configuration to prevent unauthorized input manipulation.
  • Monitor network traffic for unusual deserialization requests or file access patterns that may indicate exploitation attempts.
