Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Masteriyo LMS WordPress plugin before version 2.3.1 allows unauthenticated attackers to force-logout any user, including administrators, by exploiting an improperly secured AJAX action that clears user sessions. Attackers can harvest a valid nonce from a non-admin login and send a crafted request to terminate active sessions.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Masteriyo LMS plugin version is below 2.3.1 by inspecting WordPress plugin files or using commands like 'wp plugin list' in WP-CLI. Monitor for unusual session terminations or failed login attempts.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can disrupt website operations by forcing users to re-authenticate, potentially locking them out. Attackers could use it to disrupt administrative access or cause inconvenience by repeatedly logging users out. It may also enable further attacks if combined with other vulnerabilities.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling unauthorized session termination, potentially disrupting access controls and data protection measures. Forced logouts may interfere with audit trails and user authentication requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Masteriyo LMS plugin to version 2.3.1 or later immediately. If updating is not possible, disable the plugin temporarily until a patch is applied.
