Executive Summary

The Streamit WordPress theme through version 4.5.0 has an unauthenticated AJAX route that lacks authorization or nonce verification. This allows attackers to call arbitrary PHP functions with attacker-supplied arguments, enabling privilege escalation and remote code execution.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Streamit WordPress theme version 4.5.0 or earlier is installed. Use WPScan to scan for vulnerable themes with: wpscan --url <target_url> --enumerate vp,vt. Look for the specific AJAX route vulnerability in the theme's code or network traffic.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can exploit this to create administrator accounts, execute malicious code remotely, or gain full control over the WordPress site. This could lead to data theft, site defacement, or further compromise of the server.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access control. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Streamit theme to the latest version if an update is available. If no update exists, consider disabling the theme or replacing it with a secure alternative. Disable unauthenticated AJAX routes if possible and implement strict input validation.
