Executive Summary

The UsersWP WordPress plugin before version 1.2.67 has a flaw in its two-factor login process. It does not properly check which authentication method a user selects, allowing someone with stolen credentials to bypass the second security step and access the account.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the UsersWP plugin. If it is below 1.2.67, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect the plugin files for version information in the WordPress admin panel.

Impact Analysis

If you use UsersWP with two-factor authentication enabled, an attacker who obtains your username and password could log in without needing the second factor. This could lead to unauthorized access to your account and sensitive data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance penalties if such breaches occur due to unpatched software.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the UsersWP plugin to version 1.2.67 or later immediately. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the two-factor authentication feature temporarily or switching to a different authentication method until the update is applied.
