Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the Bit Form WordPress plugin versions before 3.1.0. It allows unauthenticated attackers to trigger workflow actions like sending notification emails or integrations by exploiting a flaw where the plugin does not properly validate a workflow-trigger token after its associated transient expires.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Bit Form plugin version is below 3.1.0. Inspect network traffic for unauthenticated requests triggering workflow actions with expired tokens. Look for suspicious workflow re-triggers or unauthorized email/integration activations.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could send crafted requests to re-trigger workflow actions without authentication. This could lead to unauthorized emails being sent, integrations being activated, or other unintended actions based on the plugin's workflow settings.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially affect compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized access to workflow actions such as notification emails or integrations. If workflow actions involve processing or transmitting personal data, unauthorized triggering could lead to data breaches or unauthorized disclosures, violating GDPR principles of data protection and HIPAA requirements for safeguarding protected health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Bit Form plugin to version 3.1.0 or later. Disable any workflow actions temporarily if an update isn't possible. Monitor for unauthorized workflow triggers or integrations. Review logs for suspicious activity related to form submissions.
