Executive Summary

This vulnerability in MongoDB Compass allows importing connections with custom browser open commands for OIDC auth flow. Normally, these commands can only be set globally via Compass settings, but the import feature bypasses this restriction, potentially enabling unauthorized modifications.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves potential override of connection options in MongoDB Compass, particularly browser open commands for OIDC auth flow. To detect it, inspect Compass configuration files for unexpected browser command overrides and monitor network traffic for unusual OIDC auth flows. Check Compass settings and logs for unauthorized modifications.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to override connection settings, leading to unauthorized access or data breaches. If a user imports a malicious connection file, it could execute arbitrary commands when OIDC authentication is triggered.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements. Organizations using Compass may face compliance violations if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update MongoDB Compass to the latest version to address the vulnerability. Avoid importing untrusted connection files that may contain malicious browser open commands for OIDC auth flow.
