Stored XSS in Brands for WooCommerce WordPress Plugin

Description

The Brands for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via 'br_brand_tooltip' Term Meta Field in all versions up to, and including, 3.8.8 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with custom-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Because the payload is stored in term meta rather than post content, the WordPress unfiltered_html capability exception does not apply, meaning Shop Manager-level users β€” who normally lack unfiltered_html β€” can fully exploit this vulnerability.

Executive Summary

The Brands for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress has a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'br_brand_tooltip' term meta field. This allows authenticated attackers with custom-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts into pages. The vulnerability bypasses WordPress's unfiltered_html capability exception because the payload is stored in term meta rather than post content.

Detection Guidance

Check for the Brands for WooCommerce plugin version 3.8.8 or lower. Inspect term meta fields for stored scripts in 'br_brand_tooltip'. Use WordPress admin or database queries to review meta values for suspicious content.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to inject malicious scripts into pages viewed by users. This could lead to theft of sensitive information, session hijacking, or defacement of the website. Users with Shop Manager-level access can fully exploit this vulnerability even though they normally lack unfiltered_html capabilities.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, which may violate GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. A successful exploit could result in data breaches, triggering compliance violations and potential legal penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Brands for WooCommerce plugin to the latest version. Remove any unauthorized scripts from term meta fields. Restrict custom-level and Shop Manager user permissions to reduce attack surface.
