Description

The Open User Map – Interactive Leaflet Maps plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Shortcode Attributes in all versions up to, and including, 1.4.45 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The attack does not require post publication; a Contributor submitting a post for pending review is sufficient, as the payload executes when an Administrator opens the pending-review preview.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Open User Map – Interactive Leaflet Maps WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via shortcode attributes. The scripts execute when a user, such as an administrator, views a page containing the injected payload.

Detection Guidance

Detection involves checking for the vulnerable plugin version (up to 1.4.45) in WordPress installations. Inspect WordPress admin panels for the Open User Map – Interactive Leaflet Maps plugin. Look for unauthorized scripts in posts or pages, especially those submitted by contributors.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal sensitive user data, hijack sessions, or perform actions on behalf of users. Since the payload executes when an admin views a page, it could lead to full site compromise. The attack does not require post publication, making it easier to exploit.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection. If exploited, it may result in data breaches, triggering legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage for organizations handling sensitive information.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the plugin to the latest version beyond 1.4.45 immediately. Remove or disable the plugin if updates are unavailable. Review all posts and pages for suspicious scripts. Restrict contributor-level access to minimize attack surface.
