CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This is a use-after-free vulnerability in Skia, a graphics library used by Google Chrome. It occurs when a program continues to use memory after it has been freed, potentially leading to corruption or unintended behavior. In this case, an attacker who has already compromised the renderer process could exploit this to escape the browser's sandbox via a specially crafted HTML page.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to Google Chrome versions prior to 151.0.7922.72. To detect it, check your Chrome version by running chrome --version or chrome://version in the browser. If your version is below 151.0.7922.72, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

If you are using an affected version of Google Chrome, this vulnerability could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on your system or gain control of your computer. Since it enables sandbox escape, it could bypass security restrictions and access sensitive data or perform actions outside the browser.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. Organizations using affected Chrome versions may face compliance breaches, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Google Chrome to version 151.0.7922.72 or later to address the use after free vulnerability in Skia.
