CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an integer overflow in QUIC, a protocol used for internet communication, within Google Chrome versions before 151.0.7922.72. An attacker who already compromised the renderer process could exploit this to potentially escape the browser's sandbox and execute arbitrary code on the host system.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to Google Chrome versions prior to 151.0.7922.72. To detect it, check your Chrome version by running chrome://version/ in the browser or checking your system's installed packages. If your version is below 151.0.7922.72, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

If you use an affected version of Chrome, an attacker could gain control over your system by tricking you into visiting a malicious webpage. This could lead to data theft, installation of malware, or further network compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows a remote attacker to potentially escape the sandbox via a crafted HTML page, which could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data. This could violate GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Google Chrome to version 151.0.7922.72 or later immediately. This can be done through the browser's built-in update mechanism or your system's package manager. Restart the browser after updating to ensure the patch is applied.
