CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a use-after-free issue in the GPU component of Google Chrome on Mac. It occurs when a program tries to use memory that has already been freed, potentially leading to crashes or unintended behavior. An attacker who has compromised the renderer process could exploit this to escape the sandbox via a crafted HTML page.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires checking the installed version of Google Chrome. Compare your version against 151.0.7922.72 or later. On Mac, use the command: defaults read /Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/Info.plist CFBundleShortVersionString. If the version is below 151.0.7922.72, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code or escape the browser sandbox, potentially gaining control over your system. This could lead to data theft, malware installation, or further compromise of your device.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Google Chrome to version 151.0.7922.72 or later immediately. This can be done via the built-in update mechanism or by downloading the latest version from Google's official website. Restart all browser sessions after updating.
