CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a use-after-free issue in V8, the JavaScript engine used by Google Chrome. It allows an attacker who tricks a user into installing a malicious extension to execute arbitrary code within a sandboxed environment. The issue exists in Chrome versions prior to 151.0.7922.72.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to Google Chrome versions prior to 151.0.7922.72. To detect it, check your Chrome version by running chrome://version/ in the browser address bar. If your version is below 151.0.7922.72, the system is vulnerable. Additionally, inspect installed extensions for suspicious activity or unauthorized permissions.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to run malicious code on your system through a compromised Chrome extension. However, the sandboxing limits the impact, reducing the risk of full system compromise. Successful exploitation requires user interaction to install the malicious extension.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly impact compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards as it is a low-severity use-after-free issue in Chrome's V8 engine with sandbox escape potential. Compliance risks would depend on specific implementation and mitigation measures rather than the vulnerability itself.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Google Chrome to version 151.0.7922.72 or later to address the use after free vulnerability in V8.
