Executive Summary

ONTAP versions 9.16.1 and higher with WebAuthn multi-factor authentication (MFA) configured are susceptible to a vulnerability related to the Relying Party ID. If successfully exploited, an attacker with valid credentials could bypass MFA.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability cannot be directly detected through commands as it involves a bypass of WebAuthn MFA in ONTAP systems. Check if ONTAP versions 9.16.1 or higher are running with WebAuthn MFA enabled. Review authentication logs for unusual access patterns or failed MFA attempts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with valid credentials could bypass multi-factor authentication, gaining unauthorized access to systems or data protected by MFA.

Compliance Impact

Bypassing MFA could lead to unauthorized access, potentially violating data protection requirements under GDPR or HIPAA, resulting in compliance failures and legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable WebAuthn multi-factor authentication (MFA) on ONTAP versions 9.16.1 and higher until a patch is applied. Review and update Relying Party ID configurations to ensure proper validation.
