Executive Summary

Hulumi is an open-source toolkit for secure cloud infrastructure. Prior to version 1.4.0, a vulnerability allowed bypass via decoy sibling resources targeting a different bucket. This means attackers could manipulate or access resources indirectly through related but separate components.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your @hulumi/policies package version is below 1.4.0. Run 'npm list @hulumi/policies' to verify the installed version. If vulnerable, update to version 1.4.0 or later. Inspect S3 bucket configurations for hardening compliance, focusing on public-access blocks, SSE-KMS encryption, ownership controls, versioning, and TLS-only bucket policies.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow unauthorized access or manipulation of cloud resources, potentially leading to data breaches, service disruptions, or unauthorized changes to infrastructure configurations. Users running versions before 1.4.0 are at risk.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data exposure, which may violate compliance requirements such as GDPR or HIPAA. Organizations must ensure their infrastructure is patched to avoid potential regulatory penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Hulumi to version 1.4.0 or later to patch the vulnerability. Remove any decoy sibling resources targeting different buckets as they may be used for bypass.
