Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a DNSSEC validation bypass where wildcard expansion proofs like NSEC or NSEC3 records are accepted without proper signature validation. This happens specifically when the wildcard answer is a CNAME or DNAME record.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to bypass DNSSEC protections, potentially redirecting users to malicious sites without detection. This could lead to phishing attacks or unauthorized data access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows DNSSEC validation bypass through wildcard expansion proofs, which could lead to unauthorized or malicious DNS responses being accepted without proper validation. This may impact compliance with standards requiring data integrity and secure communications, such as GDPR's requirement for secure data processing or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information, by potentially enabling man-in-the-middle attacks or data interception.

Mitigation Strategies

Update DNSSEC validating resolvers to reject wildcard expansion proofs when the wildcard answer is a CNAME or DNAME record without proper signature validation. Ensure DNS software is patched to address this validation bypass issue.
