Description

xrdp is an open source RDP server. In versions 0.10.6 and prior, when an authenticated user session is initialized using the Xvnc backend over UNIX domain sockets, the Xvnc process is launched with insufficient authentication mechanisms. A local authenticated attacker could exploit this vulnerability to bypass intended session isolation, allowing them to unauthorizedly view or control the active desktop sessions of other users on the same system. Users using other backends, such as xorgxrdp or Xvnc over TCP sockets, are not affected. This issue has been fixed in version 0.10.6.1.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects xrdp versions 0.10.6 and prior when using the Xvnc backend over UNIX domain sockets. It allows insufficient authentication during session initialization, enabling a local authenticated attacker to bypass session isolation and access or control other users' active desktop sessions on the same system.

Detection Guidance

Check xrdp version with 'xrdp --version' or 'dpkg -l xrdp' (Debian/Ubuntu) or 'rpm -qa xrdp' (RHEL). If version is 0.10.6 or earlier, the system is vulnerable. Verify backend usage with 'ps aux | grep xrdp' to see if Xvnc is running over UNIX domain sockets.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to view or control other users' desktop sessions, potentially accessing sensitive data or performing unauthorized actions on the system. This requires the attacker to already have local authenticated access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations using affected xrdp versions may face compliance violations and potential data breaches.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade xrdp to version 0.10.6.1 or later immediately. If using Xvnc over UNIX domain sockets, switch to xorgxrdp backend or Xvnc over TCP sockets. Restart xrdp service after upgrade.
