Executive Summary

Apache Traffic Server has a flaw where it mishandles PROXY protocol input. This causes it to truncate ports and overflow the stack, potentially leading to crashes or unexpected behavior.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking the Apache Traffic Server version in use. Run: apache-trafficserver -v or check package managers like apt list --installed | grep trafficserver or yum list installed | grep trafficserver. If the version is between 8.0.0-8.1.9, 9.0.0-9.2.14, or 10.0.0-10.1.3, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to cause denial-of-service conditions or execute arbitrary code by sending maliciously crafted PROXY protocol data. Systems running affected versions are at risk.

Compliance Impact

The vulnerability involves stack overflow due to improper handling of PROXY protocol input in Apache Traffic Server. This could potentially lead to denial of service or arbitrary code execution, which may impact data availability and integrity. However, the provided CVE data does not specify direct implications for GDPR or HIPAA compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache Traffic Server to version 9.2.15 or 10.1.4 immediately. Follow standard upgrade procedures for your distribution. If upgrading is not possible, consider disabling PROXY protocol support temporarily until the update is applied.
