Executive Summary

VMware vCenter has a directory traversal vulnerability in its Syslog server. This allows a remote attacker with network access to vCenter to execute arbitrary code on the system.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires checking for directory traversal attempts targeting the vCenter Syslog server. Monitor logs for unusual paths or encoded sequences in requests. Use network traffic analysis tools like tcpdump or Wireshark to inspect traffic to vCenter ports (default 514/TCP/UDP for Syslog).

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gain full control over your vCenter server, potentially leading to data breaches, unauthorized access to virtual machines, or disruption of services.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data exfiltration, violating compliance requirements such as GDPR or HIPAA, which mandate strict data protection and access controls.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security patches from VMware to address the directory traversal vulnerability in the Syslog server component of vCenter.
