Executive Summary

This is a denial-of-service (DoS) vulnerability in MySQL Server and MySQL Cluster. It allows a high-privileged attacker with network access to cause the server to hang or crash repeatedly by exploiting the Optimizer component. The impact is limited to availability disruption.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects MySQL Server and MySQL Cluster versions listed. Detection requires checking installed versions against the affected ranges. Use commands like 'mysql --version' or 'mysqld --version' to check MySQL Server version. For MySQL Cluster, check the ndb_mgmd or ndbd process versions. If versions fall within 8.4.0-8.4.10, 9.7.0-9.7.1 (Server) or 8.0.0-8.0.47, 8.4.0-8.4.10, 9.7.0-9.7.1 (Cluster), the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

If you use affected versions of MySQL Server or MySQL Cluster, an attacker could disrupt database operations, causing downtime and preventing access to critical data or applications relying on the database.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes denial-of-service (DoS) conditions in MySQL Server and MySQL Cluster, leading to system unavailability. For GDPR, this could impact data availability and integrity requirements. For HIPAA, it may disrupt access to protected health information, potentially violating availability standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade MySQL Server and MySQL Cluster to versions 8.4.11 or later, or 9.7.2 or later, depending on your current installation. Apply the latest patches from Oracle to address the vulnerability in the Server: Optimizer component.
