Executive Summary

This is a vulnerability in Oracle VM VirtualBox version 7.2.12. It allows a low-privileged attacker with local access to take over the virtualization software. The attack requires only logon to the system running VirtualBox and can lead to full compromise of the software.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires checking the installed version of Oracle VM VirtualBox. If version 7.2.12 is present, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'VBoxManage --version' or check installed packages via system package managers (e.g., 'dpkg -l | grep virtualbox' on Debian/Ubuntu or 'rpm -qa | grep VirtualBox' on RHEL-based systems).

Impact Analysis

If you use Oracle VM VirtualBox 7.2.12, an attacker with local access could gain control over your virtualization environment. This could allow them to access or modify data, disrupt operations, or use your system for further attacks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows low privileged attackers to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox, potentially leading to unauthorized access, data breaches, or system takeover. Such impacts could violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (healthcare data security) by exposing sensitive information or disrupting critical systems.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Oracle VM VirtualBox to the latest version to address the vulnerability. If updating is not immediately possible, restrict access to the system running VirtualBox and monitor for suspicious activity.
