Executive Summary

This is a critical vulnerability in Oracle Coherence, a middleware product. It allows an unauthenticated attacker to remotely access and take over the system via network TCP connections. The flaw affects versions 12.2.1.4.0 through 15.1.1.0.0.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for vulnerable versions of Oracle Coherence. Use network scanning tools like Nmap to identify Oracle Coherence services running on ports 7574 (default for Coherence). Check installed software versions on systems using commands like 'rpm -qa | grep coherence' or 'dpkg -l | grep coherence' on Linux, or 'Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_Product | Where-Object {$_.Name -like "*Coherence*"}' on Windows. Monitor network traffic for unauthorized TCP connections to Coherence ports.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to fully compromise Oracle Coherence, leading to unauthorized access, data breaches, or system takeover. This could disrupt services, expose sensitive data, or allow further network infiltration.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to violations of GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data privacy) due to potential unauthorized access to sensitive information. Organizations using affected versions may face compliance failures and regulatory penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security patches from Oracle for affected Coherence versions immediately. If patches are unavailable, isolate the system from untrusted networks and disable TCP access to Oracle Coherence until updates are applied.
