Executive Summary

This is a vulnerability in Oracle Coherence, a middleware product. It allows an unauthenticated attacker with network access to potentially take over the system by exploiting a difficult-to-exploit flaw in the Core component. The attack could impact confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the system.

Detection Guidance

Detection involves checking for Oracle Coherence instances running vulnerable versions (12.2.1.4.0, 14.1.1.0.0, 14.1.2.0.0, 15.1.1.0.0) and monitoring network traffic on TCP ports typically used by Coherence (default 7574, 8088, or custom ports). Use commands like 'netstat -tulnp | grep 7574' or 'ss -tulnp | grep 7574' to check active listeners. Inspect process listings with 'ps aux | grep coherence' to identify running instances.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to gain full control over your Oracle Coherence system. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, modification or deletion of critical information, and disruption of services relying on this system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR, HIPAA, and other regulations. Unauthorized access or data loss could result in legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage for organizations handling sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Oracle Coherence to a non-vulnerable version (12.2.1.4.1, 14.1.1.0.1, 14.1.2.0.1, or 15.1.1.0.1 or later). If updating is not possible, restrict network access to TCP ports used by Oracle Coherence and disable unnecessary services.
