Executive Summary

This is a critical vulnerability in Oracle Coherence, a middleware product. It allows an unauthenticated attacker to remotely access and take over the system via HTTP without needing credentials. The flaw affects versions 12.2.1.4.0 and 14.1.1.0.0.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects Oracle Coherence versions 12.2.1.4.0 and 14.1.1.0.0. Detection involves checking for exposed instances of Oracle Coherence via HTTP. Use network scanning tools like nmap to identify open ports (default is 8080 or 8081) on systems running Oracle Coherence. Example command: nmap -p 8080,8081 <target_IP>. Check for unauthenticated access by attempting HTTP requests to / or /coherence endpoints.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to fully compromise Oracle Coherence, leading to unauthorized access, data theft, system manipulation, or service disruption. Since it requires no authentication, the risk is high for exposed systems.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data security) requirements. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security patches from Oracle for Oracle Coherence versions 12.2.1.4.0 and 14.1.1.0.0. If patches are unavailable, consider isolating affected systems from network access or disabling the HTTP interface until updates are applied.
