Executive Summary

This is a critical vulnerability in Oracle Coherence, a middleware product. It allows an unauthenticated attacker to remotely access and take over the system via network connections. The flaw affects versions 12.2.1.4.0 and later.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking for Oracle Coherence instances running on affected versions (12.2.1.4.0, 14.1.1.0.0, 14.1.2.0.0, 15.1.1.0.0) and verifying if they are exposed to TCP network access without authentication. Use network scanning tools like nmap to identify Coherence services on standard ports (e.g., 7574, 7575, 7576).

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to fully compromise Oracle Coherence, leading to loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data processed by the system. This could result in data breaches, unauthorized access, or system outages.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to violations of GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized data access or breaches. Organizations using affected Oracle Coherence versions may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of compliance certifications.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security patches from Oracle for affected Oracle Coherence versions immediately. If patches are unavailable, restrict network access to TCP ports used by Oracle Coherence via firewall rules and disable unnecessary services.
