Executive Summary

This is a critical vulnerability in Oracle Coherence, a middleware product. It allows an unauthenticated attacker with network access to take over the system via TCP. The flaw affects versions 12.2.1.4.0 through 15.1.1.0.0 and has a CVSS score of 9.8, indicating severe impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects Oracle Coherence versions 12.2.1.4.0, 14.1.1.0.0, 14.1.2.0.0, and 15.1.1.0.0. Detection involves checking for these versions and exposed TCP ports. Use commands like 'netstat -tuln | grep <port>' or 'ss -tuln | grep <port>' to identify open ports. Verify Oracle Coherence service status with 'systemctl status coherence' or 'service coherence status'.

Impact Analysis

If you use an affected Oracle Coherence version, an attacker could gain full control of the system. This could lead to data theft, unauthorized modifications, or system disruption. The vulnerability is easily exploitable over the network without authentication.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could severely impact compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, and other regulations. Unauthorized access risks data breaches, leading to potential fines, legal penalties, and reputational damage due to compromised confidentiality and integrity of sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately apply the latest security patches from Oracle for affected Coherence versions. If patches are unavailable, restrict network access to TCP ports used by Oracle Coherence and disable unnecessary services. Monitor for unusual network traffic or unauthorized access attempts.
