Executive Summary

This is a critical vulnerability in Oracle Coherence, a middleware product. It allows an unauthenticated attacker to remotely access and take over the system via network connections. The flaw affects versions 12.2.1.4.0 through 15.1.1.0.0 and has a maximum severity score of 9.8 due to its impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for vulnerable versions of Oracle Coherence. Use commands like 'find / -name coherence.jar' to locate the JAR file and verify its version against affected releases (12.2.1.4.0, 14.1.1.0.0, 14.1.2.0.0, 15.1.1.0.0). Network scanning tools like Nmap can identify open TCP ports associated with Oracle Coherence services.

Impact Analysis

If you use affected Oracle Coherence versions, an attacker could gain full control of your system. This could lead to data theft, unauthorized modifications, or system disruption. The attack requires only network access, making it highly dangerous.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could severely impact compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, and other regulations. Unauthorized system takeover risks exposing sensitive data, leading to potential violations, fines, or legal consequences due to compromised confidentiality and integrity.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately apply the latest security patches from Oracle for affected Coherence versions. If patches are unavailable, restrict network access to TCP ports used by Oracle Coherence via firewall rules and disable unnecessary services.
