Executive Summary

This is a denial-of-service (DoS) vulnerability in Oracle Coherence, a middleware product. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit it remotely via network access to crash or hang the service repeatedly, causing complete unavailability.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects Oracle Coherence versions 12.2.1.4.0, 14.1.1.0.0, 14.1.2.0.0, and 15.1.1.0.0. Detection involves checking for exposed TCP ports used by Oracle Coherence and monitoring for crashes or hangs. Use network scanning tools like nmap to identify open ports (default Coherence ports are 7574, 8088, or 8089). Check application logs for repeated crashes or denial-of-service events.

Impact Analysis

If you use affected Oracle Coherence versions (12.2.1.4.0, 14.1.1.0.0, 14.1.2.0.0, 15.1.1.0.0), an attacker could disrupt your service, leading to downtime and loss of availability for applications relying on it.

Compliance Impact

Downtime from this DoS attack could violate availability requirements in GDPR (data processing integrity) and HIPAA (system access controls), potentially leading to compliance violations if service disruption impacts protected data access.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security patches from Oracle for affected Oracle Coherence versions (12.2.1.4.0, 14.1.1.0.0, 14.1.2.0.0, 15.1.1.0.0). If patches are unavailable, consider isolating the vulnerable component from network access or disabling it until updates are applied.
