Executive Summary

This is a vulnerability in MySQL Server and MySQL Cluster products affecting specific versions. It involves the Group Replication GCS component and allows a high-privileged attacker with local access to compromise the server or cluster, potentially leading to full takeover.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires checking MySQL Server or MySQL Cluster versions against affected releases (8.4.0-8.4.10, 9.7.0-9.7.1 for Server; 8.0.0-8.0.47, 8.4.0-8.4.10, 9.7.0-9.7.1 for Cluster). Use commands like 'mysql --version' or 'mysqld --version' to verify installed versions.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to take over the MySQL Server or MySQL Cluster, leading to unauthorized access, data theft, modification, or deletion. It requires high privileges and local access, making it harder to exploit but still dangerous.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR, HIPAA, or other regulations. Organizations using affected MySQL versions should address this to maintain compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade MySQL Server and MySQL Cluster to versions 8.4.11 or later, or 9.7.2 or later, as these versions address the vulnerability. Apply the latest patches from Oracle to prevent exploitation.
