Executive Summary

This is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in MSI Center's NTIOLib_X64.sys driver. It allows attackers with low-privileged code execution to escalate privileges to SYSTEM by exploiting insufficient validation of command origins.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves the MSI Center NTIOLib_X64 driver. Detection requires checking for the presence of the vulnerable driver file NTIOLib_X64.sys in the system. Use commands like 'where NTIOLib_X64.sys' or 'dir /s NTIOLib_X64.sys' in Command Prompt to locate the file. Verify the driver version and compare it with MSI's latest updates.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to gain full control of your system, install malware, steal data, or perform other malicious actions with SYSTEM privileges.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows local attackers to escalate privileges to SYSTEM level, which could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data or system configurations. Such privilege escalation risks may violate compliance requirements in standards like GDPR or HIPAA that mandate strict access controls and protection of personal or health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update MSI Center to the latest version from the official MSI website to ensure the vulnerable driver is patched. If an update is unavailable, consider uninstalling MSI Center until a patch is released. Restrict local user permissions to reduce attack surface and monitor system logs for suspicious activity related to the driver.
