Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an OS Command Injection flaw in ELECOM wireless LAN routers and access points. It exists in the Restore Settings feature. An attacker who can log in to the device can execute arbitrary OS commands.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves OS command injection in ELECOM wireless LAN routers via the Restore Settings feature. To detect it, check for unauthorized command execution attempts during firmware restore operations. Monitor network traffic for suspicious POST requests to /cgi-bin/restore.cgi with payloads like ';ls' or '|id'. Inspect system logs for unexpected child processes spawned by the router's web server during restore operations.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain control over the router or access point, potentially intercepting network traffic, installing malware, or using the device as a pivot point to attack other systems on the network.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows arbitrary OS command execution by authenticated attackers, which could lead to unauthorized access, data exfiltration, or system compromise. Such risks may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (healthcare data security) by enabling unauthorized access to sensitive information.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the firmware of all ELECOM wireless LAN routers and access points to the latest version. Disable remote login capabilities if not required and restrict administrative access to trusted networks only.
